Hurt teaches us great lessons. It reveals our strength. It reveals areas where we can place attention for improvement. It helps us find our voice. The inner voice is never as strong as it is when we are hurting. Hurt is an invitation to more deeply explore ourselves. It is as “down and dirty” as we need it to be to find peace again. Pain gifts us with a way to pinpoint areas within that need immediate attention. Whether hurt shows up as a physical or emotional opportunity- it’s valid and real.
Hurt helps us ponder and reflect. It helps us find what we’re made of and where we came from.
Hiding from hurt doesn’t work. Stuffing it down inside, choosing not to acknowledge it doesn’t release it. The only way for hurt to be pardoned of its important duty is to give it another job to do. If hurt has permission it will continue with its work, no expense spared. However, hurt can be reassigned. Once hurt has another job it can serve us more appropriately. When we need fuel for endeavors hurt can propel us. It can be like a rocket directly pointed in the direction of our greatest success.
Hurt isn’t terrible. It’s a guide. It’s not a demon or enemy. It’s a nudge in the direction of our dreams.
It’s easy to fall into pits and snares. It’s easy to get thrown off course. The exploration of hurt leads us down many pathways. If we are brave and willing to go deep enough, all these paths lead back to God.
Whatever wars we create within ourselves, the more we suffer. Likewise, it’s not necessary to fight. By surrendering to hurt and asking it what job it would rather be doing, you will unlock a hidden gem.
Hurt doesn’t want to hurt. It doesn’t really like that job. Dialogue with hurt and it will reveal to you that it would much rather be doing the job of “love.” It would rather understand and be understood. It would rather help and be well. It would rather be of service than of hindrance.
So give hurt the tools to succeed at its new job. Listen to it. Understand it. Be with it gently, quietly. Embrace it. Like a frightened child, give it peace. Create a space so hurt can transform into the beautiful butterfly it was always meant to be… You.
